Honored Hero
Ady's Story told by her Mom, Bekah.
Ady was born February 25, 2007. She is a VERY outgoing, loving little girl, who absolutely loves life, and loves to play. She started complaining of some leg pain on her 4th birthday on a trip to Kansas City. The pain went away, until three weeks later. At that time we took her to acute care, where they did blood work and x-rays. They said she had an infection in the fluid in her hip joint caused by a past ear infection. We gave her ibuprofen and she seemed to be treated, until three weeks later when it all flared up again, but worse. She sleeps, doesn't eat, doesn't walk, and is miserable when she has these flare ups. After the third time of having this I took her to the bone institute at Sanford where they did blood work yet again. The blood work came back fine, so we pushed to have an MRI done. The MRI showed that there was infection in her pelvis. During that time we were admitted to the hospital for 5 days, where they tried draining the fluid in her pelvis and inserted a PIC line for the antibiotic treatment she would be on for the next 4-6 weeks. She seemed to be doing really well once again. Three weeks later she came into our room early one morning saying her leg hurt again. We took her back to her infectious disease doctor who ordered another MRI to see how things were progressing. It showed a new area of fluid in her pelvis. They did another surgery and drained the fluid, put a pump in to drain any other fluid, and did a bone biopsy. The pathologist at Sanford could not tell if the biopsy had areas of concern because of the inflammation that had been going on in her pelvis or if it was something else. They sent the biopsy to Mayo to be reviewed by them. On May 18, 2011 we received the call that she had Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. Ady went through 2 years of chemotherapy and is currently Cancer Free!!
Ady is a smart, happy, outgoing, athletic 12 year old who loves life!! She is a 7th grader at Harrisburg South Middle School. She adores cheer and tumble and spends many hours with the Harrisburg High School competitive cheer team. She has three younger brothers and loves her dogs. Ady has be able to share her story through other avenues and is passionate about furthering research for childhood cancer.
