STUDENTS OF THE YEAR WICHITA

The Students of the Year campaign is a philanthropic leadership development program through which highly motivated, high-school leaders embark on a journey of professional growth, ensuring that they stand out when preparing for college and beyond. During the program, students foster professional skills such as entrepreneurship, marketing, and project management in order to raise funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). Student leaders fundraise for LLS in honor of children who are blood cancer survivors. The title Student(s) of the Year is awarded to the candidate or co-candidate team in each community that raises the most funds during the 7-week competition.

Hannah Soderstrom

Hannah is currently a junior at Maize High School. In 2016, Hannah was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Before she was diagnosed everyone thought she had symptoms of mono until blood tests were taken and the doctor found her platelets low. At a young age, Hannah battled through chemo that made her nauseous, weak and emotional. During treatment she received over 50 blood transfusions. Having your port accessed was like getting impaled, Hannah said. After 2 1/2 years of many nights in the hospital and many visits to the doctor Hannah is now cancer-free!! Thanks for LLS research, ALL has a 90.6 percent survival rate for children and adolescents younger than 15 years.

Hannah is now and has been an amazing advocate for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This year, she traveled to Washington D.C. to be the voice representing Kansas patients and survivors.
